Our small community nestled in the foothills of the Kings Canyon National Park is being targeted to change the name of our town Squaw Valley by outside people.

The first post office was opened in Squaw Valley in 1879 and the name was established then.  Local historians have told stories for generations on how Squaw Valley obtained the name.  

At a local town meeting held September 20, 2022 many locals voiced their opinions on the name change and were not in favor of it including many members of our Native American community.  It was stated by these long time families of our community that the word 'Squaw' to them is not offensive and simply means woman or wife. It was also stated by these families that taking away the name of our town is like erasing parts of their history.
