Make the UK government rule out a social media ban on under 16s
The Issue
In today's digital age, smartphones have become an indispensable tool for communication, learning, and personal development. While debates surrounding their presence in schools and teenagers' personal lives often highlight concerns about distractions and misuse, it is crucial to recognize the significant benefits that smartphones offer. Allowing teenagers access to smartphones, both in educational settings and in their personal lives, is vital for their social growth and preparedness for the modern world. From enhancing learning opportunities to growing social connections and digital literacy, smartphones in teenagers' lives plays a pivotal role in shaping their future success and adaptability. Therefore, it is crucial to understand and embrace the significance of smartphones as a valuable resource rather than viewing them solely as a distraction or a cause for concern.
Somebody asked the question of why children have these devices in the first place? Now, that is a really good question, as many people do not know and really should know to be able to come to a proper decision. Now there are many reasons to why they have smartphones. A good reason is that most school devices are not any good at all. So it is quicker to just use your own device for research tasks, unfortunately as good as the school library is. It cannot hold all the information in the world like the internet can. Another valid point is contacting parents. You could argue that on a "brick phone," you can simply ring them. What if you want to send them a message? You know how annoying typing in numbers is. Another great reason be that you are able to track buses. Let's face it, they aren't exactly reliable. Yet many rural villages don't have auto updating timetable screens like towns do. They still have paper timetables, believe it or not. So if that doesn't convince you, then what will. From contacting loved ones to being able to connect with them in person. We should be embracing technology, not trying to hide it away.
