The Issue
In recent debates around our town's decoration codes, "Skelly," the friendly skeleton figure atop Crazy Cool Collectibles, has been targeted for removal. Mooresville's codes dictate that rooftop decorations may be in violation, impacting local businesses. However, this is a matter that extends beyond just one store and skeleton figure. "Skelly" is not an isolated case. Many local businesses in Mooresville, North Carolina, utilize decorative items such as mascots, vehicles, and artistic structures to attract customers and add charm to our town. These displays are not merely decorations; they are symbolic ambassadors of our commercial spirit and represent the creativity and vibrancy of Mooresville’s business community. Despite being a structural highlight at Crazy Cool Collectibles, "Skelly" is NOT placed directly on the roof, as stated by law, but rather in a location that safely draws attention without compromising safety standards. Also, several businesses maintain larger displays without penalty. If the town code deems “Skelly” a violation, shouldn’t other businesses with similar decorations also be reviewed? These codes may require revisiting to ensure fairness and consistent enforcement. We propose a rewording of the existing code to reflect today’s diverse business landscape and to embrace the unique identities that each establishment brings to our community. In light of this, we call upon the Mooresville town council and relevant authorities to reconsider the code definitions that threaten the artistic and cultural displays of our local businesses. Let's work together to allow "Skelly" to remain in place and continue to bring joy to residents and tourists alike. Please sign this petition to support the cause and protect local creativity in Mooresville. Your support can help "Skelly" and other beloved decorations remain as a cherished part of our town's unique character.
