Keep Savannah’s Public Spaces Safe: Back the Urban Camping Ban

The Issue

Savannah’s City Council made the right call by passing a new ordinance to stop “urban camping” in public spaces. This law helps law enforcement keep our parks, sidewalks, and town squares clean, safe, and family-friendly. It’s a common-sense step to restore order and support the quality of life that residents expect and deserve.

Despite loud opposition, this ordinance isn’t about punishing anyone — it’s about giving our officers a tool to address dangerous and unsanitary encampments that put the whole community at risk. No one can be arrested without a warning first, and the city continues to invest in housing, shelter, and services for those who want help. This policy is backed by groups working directly with the homeless because they know that compassion works best when it’s paired with accountability.

We can’t allow public spaces to turn into lawless zones. We owe it to our kids, our seniors, our veterans, and our small businesses to stand up for safe streets and strong leadership. Weakening this ordinance now would be a mistake. City leaders need to hold the line.
