Keep Registered Sex Offenders Off Plateau Valley School Grounds and Youth Events
The Issue
Every parent deserves to know their child can attend school, sporting events, concerts, and other youth activities in an environment where student safety comes first.
Currently, Colorado law does not automatically prohibit all registered sex offenders from being present on school grounds or at school-sponsored events. That leaves local communities and school districts with an important responsibility: to adopt policies that prioritize the safety of children.
We believe Plateau Valley should lead by example.
We are calling on the Plateau Valley School District Board of Education to adopt a policy that restricts registered sex offenders from school property and school-sponsored youth events to the fullest extent permitted by law. This includes athletic competitions, concerts, performances, dances, and other activities where children gather.
Our schools exist for students. They should be places where children can learn, compete, and grow without parents wondering whether someone convicted of a sexual offense may be in the crowd.
This petition is not about punishment beyond what the courts have imposed. It is about prevention, public confidence, and putting the safety of children first. We recognize that any policy must comply with state and federal law, including any legally required exceptions. But where our district has the authority to act, it should.
We are asking the Plateau Valley School District to:
1) Adopt a policy restricting registered sex offenders from school grounds and school-sponsored youth events to the fullest extent permitted by law.
2)Establish clear procedures for any legally required exceptions.
3)Prioritize student safety in all future policy decisions involving access to school property and youth activities.
4)Communicate these policies clearly to families, staff, and the community.
Children deserve safe schools. Parents deserve peace of mind. Our community deserves policies that reflect those values.
If you believe student safety should always come first, please sign this petition and share it with others who care about protecting the children of Plateau Valley.
