Keep Puuhonua Tent City as a Safe Haven for the Less Fortunate

Keep Puuhonua Tent City as a Safe Haven for the Less Fortunate
The Issue
Established in the wake of the Maui Wildfires for Disaster Relief . And Also in the rise of homelessness and the distress it brings to many in our society, I am writing this petition to urge the State of Hawaii to keep Puuhonua O Nene “A Safe Place of Refuge “
The recent Maui wildfires have caused unimaginable devastation, leaving countless individuals with nothing. Among the victims, those served by this encampment and organization are some of the most vulnerable—elderly individuals, people with disabilities, and those suffering from severe trauma and PTSD, with no other place to turn. Now, these individuals face the unthinkable prospect of being forced onto the streets of Kahului. This situation is not only unjust but also deeply inhumane.
It is the state’s responsibility to care for its citizens, especially in the aftermath of a disaster of this magnitude. While it has been noted that the current encampment is not in an ideal location, there are numerous open areas where the state could relocate these individuals to ensure their safety and dignity. Addressing this issue should be a top priority, as supporting fire victims is a cause everyone can rally
In the face of rising inflation and escalating homelessness, The Recent Disasters , Fires : Project Vision Tent City offers a critical solution to a growing crisis. It provides not just shelter, but dignity, safety, and a modicum of comfort to those individuals who are elderly, handicapped, or simply down on their luck.
We urge the state to establish designated safe zones for individuals in need, which often include elderly citizens and veterans. Providing such spaces is not only a Humanitarian Necessity but also a more hygienic and practical solution to address housing insecurity.
A common concern is the long-term sustainability of wooden structures in such zones. However, tents are an affordable, practical, and purpose-serving alternative. Compared to living on the side of the road, they offer a safer and more dignified option. Many individuals in need genuinely appreciate having access to these spaces, which bring stability and a sense of security.
We call upon the state to prioritize the establishment of these safe zones and ensure they are adequately resourced to serve their purpose effectively. And not have strict requirements on who is eligible if they have Good Behavior and Are no danger to the community .
This step would demonstrate a commitment to supporting vulnerable populations and upholding basic human dignity.
Furthermore, keeping the Tent City operational has numerous benefits for our local community. It enhances public sanitation, reduces street population, and can potentially lower crime rates as it meets the basic needs of its residents. It helps maintain the aesthetic beauty of our beloved island, directing homeless and less fortunate persons to appropriate, safe areas.
Why should our state permit tents on the roadside, while considering the closure of this well-managed encampment? This initiative is crucial, long overdue, and should actually be expanded, not shrunk. We must ensure that every individual has a chance to be somewhere safe, particularly in times of hardship and struggle.
We are appealing not just for puʻuhonua Project Vision Tent City – this is a stand against rising homelessness and an endeavor for more humane solutions. Let's echo this plea to our representatives and compel them to act responsibly. Please, sign this petition to keep Project Vision Tent City operational. Let's help those who need that little extra assistance. Together, we can make a meaningful change.
We are raising funds to support efforts advocating for the establishment of a safe tent city to provide shelter for those displaced and vulnerable to the streets. While the government should bear the responsibility of caring for the Lahaina fire victims, we aim to bring immediate attention to this critical issue through grassroots action.
Our plan includes printing flyers, engaging directly with the public, renting a van to transport residents, and organizing peaceful demonstrations at the governor’s office to raise awareness and support. However, these efforts require time, resources, and funding.
Your contribution can make a meaningful difference. Please help us take action and bring visibility to this urgent cause!
