Keep Pokeworks out of Canada!

The Issue

POKEWORKS and its parent company, Toridoll, have not yet banned cruel cage confinement of laying hens in their supply chain.

These hens, many diseased or injured, are so tightly packed in small cages that they can’t move much at all, let alone spread their wings. Fractured or broken bones, mangling, and severe feather loss often result from catching their necks, wings, or legs in the cage wires. Some hens, exhausted or unable to move, are trampled to death by other birds.

These cages not only cause animal suffering but pose a serious food safety risk to consumers. Hens crammed together in cages live, breathe, and lay eggs for human consumption surrounded by feces and rotting bodies.

Major companies around the world are ditching cages. More than 130 companies worldwide have made global commitments to cage-free eggs, including Burger King, Tim Hortons, KFC, Pizza Hut, Unilever, Nestlé, InterContinental Hotels, Sodexo, Marriott, Wyndham, Compass Group, Shake Shack, Famous Brands, Costa Coffee, and Barilla. Even low-end fast-food and pet food companies are moving away from horrible cages.

Pokeworks operates more than 60 locations in the United States and plans to expand into Canada through the master franchisee EAT UP CANADA.

Pokeworks claims “being socially and environmentally responsible is a commitment.” Yet it has not publicly banned the cruel and outdated practice of caging hens in its supply chain. This is unethical and fails to recognize the global, industrywide shift towards greater food safety for cage-free eggs. Please sign this petition to keep Pokeworks out of Canada until it and Toridoll commit to going cage-free.
