Keep Pickle Ball open until 10:30 PM
The Issue
I am a teenager growing up in Flowood, Mississippi, and for many of us, the Pickle Ball is more than just a recreational facility—it is a haven. In a world where safe, inclusive spaces for teens are rare, Pickle Bowl represents one of the few places where we can socialize, stay active, and most importantly, feel safe. The decision to change the closing time from 10:30 PM to 9:00 PM has left us feeling like a part of our lives is being taken away.
Being in Mississippi, where the summers are intensely hot, playing pickleball during the cooler evening hours is not just more enjoyable—it’s sometimes the only feasible time for us to use the courts. Closing the Pickle Ball earlier limits our ability to engage in healthy, positive activities during the heat. For us teenagers, having a space that invites us after the day’s responsibilities is invaluable. During the summer months, when school is out, having a later closing time is especially important as it offers a constructive environment for us to unwind and interact.
Pickle Ball fosters a sense of community. It’s a place where families gather and friendships are strengthened. It is a free, accessible option for families who cannot afford paid activities. In a suburban area predominated by costly entertainment options, Pickle Bowl stands out as a beacon of community spirit and inclusivity.
Furthermore, extending the hours back to 10:30 PM isn’t merely about convenience; it’s about promoting a healthier community lifestyle. Allowing the Pickle Bowl to remain open later provides Flowood with a positive, supervised space for teens. This can be especially beneficial in decreasing the likelihood of delinquent activities by providing an outlet for energy and creativity in a safe environment.
City of Flowood and community leaders, we urge you to understand the impact of this decision on the lives of the city's youth and families. Please help us maintain the essence of what makes Pickle Ball so special by restoring its closing time to 10:30 PM. Help us keep alive the spirit of friendship, health, and safe community gathering.
Sign this petition to support our cause and urge the city officials to reconsider so that the Pickle Ball can remain a vital asset to our community's well-being.
