A Timely Celebration & Opportunity for Education
The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department recently celebrated 100 Years of Stewardship at South Mountain Park and Preserve. Their Instagram page has been highlighting this milestone and the importance of South Mountain in our lives. Check it out here: @cityofphoenixaz Parks and Recreation. https://www.instagram.com/phxparks/
Posts such as #16 on South Mountain’s legacy reflect the sentiment that our trails are integral to the lifestyle, health, and well-being of our community. The dedication of these lands decades ago was meant to ensure long-lasting public access and enjoyment, and we’re committed to honoring this vision.
There’s also an upcoming centennial event on Friday, November 8, at 9 a.m. Join the celebration at the newly renovated South Mountain Visitor Center for food, entertainment, and more! For more details, visit this post.

Education, Not Restriction
Many of us believe that improving educational outreach on safe hiking practices, heat awareness, and trail safety could be a powerful alternative to blanket restrictions. Cities across the East Valley are leading similar initiatives at trailheads, and it’s an approach that aligns with Phoenix’s tradition of community stewardship and public engagement. By increasing educational programming and volunteer opportunities at trailheads, we can empower hikers to make safe choices and enjoy our trails responsibly.
Together, we can continue to champion a balanced approach that supports both safety and accessibility. Please share this email with others, encourage them to attend the meetings, and keep spreading the word about our petition.
Thank you all for your ongoing commitment to our community and natural spaces!
Warm and HOT regards,
AJ
