Keep Our Roads Safe: Support Traffic Cameras & DUI/DWI Checkpoints

The Issue

In recent years, we’ve seen a rise in dangerous incidents on our roads, from reckless driving to tragic accidents caused by impaired drivers. For too many families in our community, this has meant facing an unimaginable loss, grieving loved ones who were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Every time we drive, walk, or bike along these streets, we should feel safe. But with the current lack of enforcement tools, dangerous drivers often go unchecked, putting all of us at risk.

Installing traffic cameras and setting up DUI/DWI checkpoints can make a powerful difference. Traffic cameras will help law enforcement identify unregistered vehicles, and operators as well as monitor reckless driving behaviors, serving as a deterrent for those who disregard traffic laws. Meanwhile, DUI/DWI checkpoints can prevent impaired drivers from endangering others on the road.

These initiatives have been proven in other communities to reduce traffic fatalities, promote responsible driving, and save lives. By supporting the installation of cameras and regular DUI/DWI checkpoints, you’re helping to create a safer, more secure environment for everyone in our community—whether they’re driving, cycling, or walking.

In 2022, El Paso reported 680 DUI (alcohol) crashes and injuries.  A 2020 study highlighted that 48% of traffic deaths in El Paso County involved an impaired driver, the highest percentage among large counties in the U.S.

Statewide, from 2014 to 2023, over 57% of Texas traffic fatalities involved drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs.

For more detailed and current statistics, the Texas Department of Transportation’s annual crash statistics reports are a valuable resource.
