Keep Our International Teachers: An Urgent Call to DC!

Keep Our International Teachers: An Urgent Call to DC!
La causa
I am one of over 300 international teachers in DC Public Schools whose future has been thrown into uncertainty. For more than a decade, we have dedicated our lives to nurturing the minds of Washington, D.C.'s future leaders. We have built lives here, purchased homes, and become integral threads in the fabric of this community.
Now, due to a recent and abrupt decision by DCPS to cease sponsoring permanent residency, we face an impossible choice: abandon the lives we have built here or be forced to leave the United States—and our careers—permanently when our visas expire.
This decision is not just a personal crisis for 300 educators; it is a direct threat to the quality of education in our city. International teachers bring invaluable diversity, global perspectives, and innovation to our classrooms. We enrich the cultural tapestry of DCPS, giving students a window to the world that is critical for their growth in an interconnected global society.
The potential removal of 300 experienced educators will create a catastrophic shortage in a school system that can ill afford it. The loss of our expertise and dedication will be felt immediately in classrooms across the district, undermining student progress and stability.
We are not asking for a handout. We are asking for a pathway to continue our service. We have proven our commitment through years of effective teaching and deep community ties. DCPS has already approved funding for legal immigration support—proof that the resources exist. This is a matter of priorities.
We call on the D.C. community—parents, students, community leaders, and all stakeholders—to stand with us. Please add your voice to ours and demand that DCPS reverse this decision.
Your signature can help secure a brighter future for our students and protect the dedicated educators who help them thrive.
