Keep our Homes Affordable - Forgive the $69 Million

The Issue

Esplanade Gardens was created through the State Mitchell Lama program to provide affordable housing opportunities for middle income African Americans in the community of Harlem. Upon opening in 1968, Esplanade was a premier place to live, the Jewel of Harlem still houses many of its original shareholders today.

Esplanade has provided a pathway to homeownership for 1,872 families, holding our communities together and giving local families the opportunity to improve their quality of life, afford an education and participate in community affairs.

Unfortunately our community has fallen into disrepair.  Over the years, Esplanade fell victim to vermin infestations and nearly condemned structures sorely in need of repairs.

Board Leadership acted in accordance with the parameters of the Coop program to secure a 69 million to complete much needed Capital Repairs.  This cost gets passed on to the homeowners in the form of a 30% increase to our monthly maintenance fee.

Harlem residents are already suffering from high prices, gentrification and uncertainty during this tumultuous time, it is critical that the state act to pay back the loan, and allow our fees to remain affordable.

Tell the Governor to pay back the $69 million and keep our homes affordable.
