Keep our fenced dog park open through winter

The Issue

Our local fenced dog park is not just a patch of grass; it's a haven where dogs like mine get their much-needed exercise, and a community space where we, the residents, come together. Recently, this park was opened and it quickly became an essential part of many lives in our neighborhood, offering a safe enclosed area for our dogs to play and socialize.

However, there is a pressing plan from the city to shut this beloved park for the winter. This decision threatens to cut off a vital resource for so many, including seniors and disabled handlers who find comfort and safety within the fenced area. Removing access during these critical months would force us to travel 5.5 miles to the next available off-leash area, which is a significant barrier, particularly for those with mobility challenges.

The implications of this closure extend beyond inconvenience. Closing the park would push off-leash dog activities into streets and unfenced parks, potentially leading to conflicts and accidents. It would also likely reduce compliance with waste pickup, affecting both public hygiene and neighborhood relations.

Furthermore, the city's decision does not consider the heightened risks for disabled and elderly handlers when walking dogs on icy sidewalks or driving to distant parks in treacherous road conditions during the winter months. Such measures could inadvertently increase the number of falls or accidents, undermining the safety of our community.

We are requesting the city to keep our fenced dog park open during the winter with minimal but essential maintenance. This includes ensuring gates are cleared of snow, applying pet-safe salt to paths, and maintaining regular waste pickup services. These steps, although basic, would make a tremendous difference.

Please support our cause to keep the park accessible year-round to ensure dogs remain happy and healthy, and their handlers safe. Sign this petition to urge our city to reconsider its decision and prioritize our community's needs.
