The Issue

Did you know that children's camps are not licensed?  Schools are licensed. Daycare centers are licensed.  Many parents and guardians assume that camps are licensed as well.  The Forbes family learned this is not the case after their six-year old daughter, Roxie Forbes, never came home after being dropped-off at their local summer camp.

AB 1737 requires local oversight of children’s camps to ensure that every child dropped off at camp gets to come home.  This common sense legislation requires camps to do the things you probably already assume they do, including:

1.      Children’s camp operators to register annually with the local oversight agency

2.      Annual background checks for camp employees

3.      Emergency action and operational plans

4.      One unannounced and one scheduled inspection annually by the local oversight agency, who will also maintain all records of inspections which will be available to the public.

5.      Full-time employees to report victims of child abuse or neglect

6.      Employment of a health supervisor certified in CPR and fundamental First Aid

Please consider signing this petition to let the California Legislature know that we need regulation of children’s camps, and to pass AB 1737.
