The Issue

Every day, as parents, grandparents and carers take their children to and from school, nursery and preschool, one figure stands out — our lollipop man, Martin. He has been the cornerstone of our community in Moordown for many years. Come rain or shine, he is there for us, directing traffic and ensuring that our children are protected from the dangers of a busy, hazardous road.

However, we have recently received alarming news that the council is considering removing this position from our neighbourhood as part of cost‑saving measures. This decision not only endangers our children’s safety but also disregards the immense value this role brings to our community. For families in our area, he is more than just the “lollipop man”; he is a guardian, a friend, and a vital part of our daily lives.

Statistics from the National Institute for Traffic Safety show that pedestrian incidents near schools have increased by 20% in areas without crossing guards. This is not just a statistic — it represents a very real risk to our children’s lives. Studies from the Road Safety Trust (Aug 2022) also show that the visual presence of a crossing patrol significantly improves driver behaviour by reducing speeds, increasing compliance and focusing drivers’ attention. By removing such a crucial role, the council is placing financial savings above the safety of our children.

Wimborne Road is not just an average residential street; it is a major route used by many, including HGVs, buses and emergency vehicles. Even with the recent reduction to a 20mph speed limit, this does not eliminate the risk of serious harm. Larger vehicles have significantly increased blind spots, making it more difficult for drivers to see children and increasing the likelihood of accidents.

We propose that instead of cutting this role, the council should consider alternative budget adjustments that do not compromise children’s safety.

As a community, we believe it is essential to voice our concerns and stand together to protect our children. Please sign this petition to urge BCP Council to keep Martin, our lollipop man, in his role. Let’s safeguard our children’s journey to school and preserve the spirit of our community.
