Keep our Charge Nurse, Christy on unit 2
The Issue
We, the undersigned staff members of Christy Harless Unit 2, respectfully request that she remain assigned to our unit.
In psychiatric care, consistency and continuity are essential components of effective treatment. Research has consistently shown that stable therapeutic relationships and continuity in leadership contribute to improved patient outcomes, decreased behavioral incidents, reduced patient anxiety, and increased feelings of safety and trust among psychiatric patients.
The therapeutic milieu on a psychiatric unit relies heavily on consistency, predictability, and established trust between patients and leadership, all of which may be negatively affected by unnecessary leadership changes.
As our Charge Nurse, Christy, has developed strong therapeutic relationships with both staff and patients and possesses extensive knowledge of our patients’ individual needs, triggers, behaviors, treatment plans, and unit dynamics. Abrupt changes in leadership can be particularly disruptive in a psychiatric setting, where many patients struggle with change, trust, abandonment concerns, and emotional regulation.
Additionally, neither Charge Nurse involved supports this proposed transfer. The staff on our unit strongly believe that changing leadership at this time would negatively impact staff morale, disrupt established therapeutic relationships, and potentially compromise the stability and therapeutic environment we have worked diligently to maintain.
For psychiatric patients, consistency in care is not merely a preference—it is an evidence-based component of treatment that promotes patient engagement, decreases agitation, and supports recovery. We firmly believe that maintaining our current Charge Nurse is in the best interest of both our patients and staff.
Therefore, we respectfully request that administration reconsider this decision and allow our current Charge Nurse to remain on our unit to preserve continuity of care, maintain therapeutic relationships, and support the overall well-being and safety of our patients.
