Keep Micron to the north of Route 31-Protect Meltzer Park

Keep Micron to the north of Route 31-Protect Meltzer Park
The Issue
Many people reside in Clay, New York because of the beautiful green spaces and nice mix of neighborhoods. There are plans to have industrial chip fabrication from Micron directly across route 31 near many of our homes. While residents understand the need for stateside production of microchips we also acknowledge the need to have our residential neighborhoods maintain their quality of living and to keep valuable green spaces that residents use and enjoy.
Currently the Town of Clay has held a few meetings/open houses with the public stakeholders where their land use study was shared with the public.
While there were many beautiful renderings of proposed changes to our town, there were also some that were less than desirable. Residents that reside south of the future Micron factory would have possible zoning change that would push office spaces and industrial production south of NYS Route 31 on Stearns Road, to butt up against residential neighborhoods. Currently to the south of NYS Route 31 there is green space, a church, and Meltzer Park. This space is a place where resident like to gather, walk their dogs, play sports, and enjoy the quiet green space. If this proposed zoning change were to happen then it would greatly impact residents near Meltzer and on Stearns Road. This is something that would have a negative impact due to increased production, industrial/light pollution, traffic congestion, and noise.
While the Town of Clay has an opportunity to make truly landmark decisions as they plan for the changes that come with a large company like Micron coming into town, they have an obligation to protect the quality of life for the current residents that all live south of Micron. Their vision statement has goals which state a focus on: Preserving the Town's quality of life, limiting the sprawl of general commercial and industrial development throughout the town, and to enhance and protect the Town's natural, cultural, and recreational amenities. If the proposed zoning change goes into effect then that would be in direct conflict with what their vision and goals state. Local government has a responsibility to balance progress with protecting the rights and quality of life of all residents.
As a resident, local educator, and mother I can not stand by and allow this to happen. Our neighbors deserve better than this. My children deserve better than this. Progress does not mean that we choose money or deals which negatively impact our neighbors! Especially when only one of the Town of Clay board members live near where this change would occur.
Please sign and share this petition with your friends and neighbors. It impacts all of us because if we don't become involved and keep the very things that makes Clay what it historically was, then we lose the very roots of what makes Clay an amazing community to live in. Quality of life and living in a town where people can gather is far more important than pushing industry right through our backyards. Never forget what happened to residents on Burnet Road. There has to be a limit to the sprawl of Micron or any private industry when it impacts residents negatively.
Please sign this petition and share to help protect our already shrinking green spaces in Clay.
