Keep Memorial Park Pickleball Courts Accessible
Keep Memorial Park Pickleball Courts Accessible
The Issue
Memorial Park's pickleball courts are one of Cupertino's most heavily used public recreational facilities. Residents of all ages rely on the courts for exercise, social connection, and healthy outdoor recreation.
The City's current trial restrictions—including Monday closures, reduced operating hours (9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.), and quiet paddle requests—significantly reduce public access to this valued community resource. While we support addressing neighborhood concerns, we believe the current restrictions are unnecessarily broad and should be reconsidered.
Specifically, we ask the City to:
- Define the trial's objectives and success metrics. The current trial does not specify how its effectiveness will be evaluated, making it difficult for the public to assess the basis for future decisions.
- Prioritize reasonable mitigation measures. A proposal to install a sound barrier has been deferred, while substantial access restrictions have been implemented. Physical noise mitigation should be fully evaluated before limiting public use.
- Increase transparency. Disclose the number of households that had submitted formal complaints regarding the Memorial Park pickleball courts as of the June 11, 2026, City Council meeting so the community can better understand the scope of the issue.
- Ensure equitable treatment. Apply access policies for pickleball consistently with those for other recreational facilities at Memorial Park, including the Sports Center, unless there is a clear, evidence-based reason to do otherwise.
We encourage the City to work collaboratively with residents to develop balanced, transparent, and evidence-based solutions that address neighborhood concerns while preserving equitable public access to Memorial Park.
By signing this petition, you support fair access to Memorial Park's pickleball courts and transparent, evidence-based decision-making by the City of Cupertino.
