Keep MDC Live Class Format

The Issue

The Funeral Services program (FSE) at Miami Dade College is going 95% in person starting Spring 2025. Many students at Miami Dade College do not live close to campus at all - meaning that a majority of the students in the FSE program are at least 1-2 hours away from campus excluding factors such as traffic. MDC Live is a class format that offers flexibility and multiple course loads to fit into the busy schedules of those who have children, work, and other tasks that require their presence for the majority of the day. The average time spent in the FSE Associate Degree program is approximately 7 years and the pass rates are low. Moving from the flexible online schedule that many have become accustomed to will not aid in shortening this time period or increase pass rates. Many students, like myself, take multiple classes in one day, which is only possible through MDC Live, as transport to and from MDC campus for in-person classes takes multiple hours - leaving little to no room for extracurriculars or more classes throughout the day.

The professors I have had since starting my academic journey at MDC have no problem teaching online, many of us will not be able to finish the program on time without this course modality, travel increases costs for students (especially those who do not have a personal mode of transportation), and it would overall make all of our lives more difficult if this option is taken away. Life is already incredibly expensive, we do not need to acquire more costs when they are not necessary. Spring 2025 is only a few months away, so please sign this petition and support the students who should not have to jump through hoops just to get a degree.
