Keep LRC Open for Public Use

Keep LRC Open for Public Use
The Issue
As many of us know, the Logan Recreation Center (LRC) will be closed for public starting from June, 2025. It will keep open for public use for 3 more years starting July but with very limited access and times, and it will be closed permanently. This ongoing plan will significantly impact the quality of life for many of us and I do not understand why this decision was made so suddenly.
The LRC has served greatly for various groups of people:
- For many junior/senior groups including myself, this place provides space for various physical activities including racquetball, basketball, tennis, pickleball, or weight lifting in gyms
- Some use this facility for ballroom and square dancing activities
- Others use it for aerobics and fitness class
- Many youth groups come and enjoy playing digital games and table tennis in the game room, their basketball clinics, youth baseball games, wallyball and indoor soccer leagues
- Many families with kids & infants come and enjoy their times together here and there
- ...
However, with this upcoming plan, the crucial role of the LRC will be completely lost and many of us in Logan City have no other public places to continue our social and physical activities in this city, which is one of coldest cities in UT.
Personally, I do not claim for opening LRC to public permanently especially when the Logan High School really wants to take it back and needs it for education purposes. What I do not understand is that as far as I know, the Logan City has no plans to offer a new recreation center for public. If the city council and Logan High share valid reasons to take LRC back to Logan High, the Logan City should come up plans to provide other places for residents with transitional plans to minimize the negative impact of many residents and families.
While we need more public places considering the growth of population in Logan City, the city is trying to limit the access to the LRC.
Therefore, through this petition, I request that the Logan City should provide a plausible transitional plan that allows residents to access the LRC fully as it has been until a new recreation center is available for public.
Updated: Recently, I found the first study for the feasibility of a county wide indoor recreation center was approved, which will take about 12 weeks. If a miracle happens, more detailed 2nd study may be approved, then, with a much slim chance, it may take 5-10 years to see some visible outcomes.
