Keep Leith Links Green, Say No to new Tesco

Keep Leith Links Green, Say No to new Tesco
The Issue
Dear Leithers,
I hope this message finds you well. I am reaching out to seek your support in opposing a new Tesco Express store proposed at the corner of Johns Place and Queen Charlotte Street, formerly occupied by Carrick Motorcycles, right by Leith Links.
Despite Tesco's claims of an "essential need" for another store, the reality is that our community is already well-served. Notably, there is a Tesco Superstore just 350 metres away on Duke Street, which offers lower prices than the Express model. Additionally, there are two other Tesco Express stores within a 450-metre radius and several other supermarkets like Sainsbury's Local, Lidl, and Aldi all conveniently located nearby within 450m.
More crucially, the unique character of Leith, defined by its independently owned cafes, shops, and bakeries, is under threat. The experience from other areas shows that such expansions can lead to closures of beloved local businesses due to intense competition.
Furthermore, the proposed site is situated at a problematic traffic junction, already known for congestion issues. Increased activity from another store will only exacerbate the traffic woes, affecting our daily commutes and overall quality of life in the area.
It's also important to highlight that with a market share leading at 26%, as reported by Statista in March 2024, Tesco's expansion could edge us towards monopolisation, diminishing the variety that our local economy thrives on. Moreover, introducing another alcohol outlet in an area with significant homeless population and recreational spaces frequented by families is irresponsible and could lead to increased alcohol-related disturbances.
I urge you to join me and many others in voicing our concerns. You can oppose this planning application by visiting the Edinburgh Council’s website, navigating to the "Planning & Building Standards" section, and submitting your comments under application number 24/02267/FUL by 12th July.
Together, we can preserve the integrity and vibrancy of Leith. Thank you for considering this important community matter.
