Keep Kenneth Hahn Park Open Every Day – Don’t Cut Community Access

Keep Kenneth Hahn Park Open Every Day – Don’t Cut Community Access
The Issue
Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area—one of the few large, accessible parks in South Los Angeles—is set to be closed every Monday and Tuesday due to budget cuts. This decision is unfair, short-sighted, and deeply harmful to the people who rely on the park most.
For many in the surrounding neighborhoods, Kenneth Hahn isn’t just a park—it’s our backyard. It's where we walk, run, reflect, gather with friends, or simply escape the stress of the city. In a community where few residents have access to private yards or air-conditioned spaces, this park is essential.
This closure removes nearly 30% of weekly access to a space that serves:
Low-income families
People without backyards or outdoor space
Community programs and summer camps
Individuals seeking mental health, fitness, and connection to nature
We, the undersigned, ask LA County Parks and Supervisor Holly Mitchell to:
Reverse the decision to close the park two days per week
Consider alternatives, like partial closures (bathrooms, specific entrances), volunteer partnerships, or reduced hours instead
Explore community-supported funding options, such as donations, optional park fees, or sponsorships
Don’t let one of LA’s rare green spaces be taken away from the very people who need it most. We’re willing to speak up. We’re willing to help. Just don’t lock us out.
Sign this petition and share it widely. Kenneth Hahn belongs to all of us.
