Keep Karen at Diamond Head Theatre

The Issue

Aloha friends and family,

It has been public knowledge for quite some time now that the Fort Ruger Theatre is currently housing its final production before demolition and relocation of DHT to a newly erected building right next door. What has been kept from the public up until now is that resident Costume Director of 37 years, Karen Wolfe, is being dismissed from her position despite her desire to transition to the new theatre, despite decades of hard work delivering breathtaking costumes, and despite an overwhelming amount of community support.

If you've been involved in theatre on O'ahu in any capacity, you surely know how central Karen is to the Honolulu theatre scene. Born and raised on the island, Karen was introduced to musical theatre by her father, Thomas “Tiger” Metcalf, which led to Karen's first production on the DHT stage in 1968, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever. Since then, Karen has been a constant in the local theatre scene, dancing in, choreographing, assistant directing, and costuming productions all across O'ahu.

If you've been involved in any DHT production, you may recognize the Costume Shop as the heart of the building. You've likely stepped in for some pupus, a beverage, or just to talk story. You've possibly stood in the foyer for a fitting, Karen sitting at your feet to fix a hem, pins in her mouth. And you've certainly heard her infectious laughter booming out of the Shop, through the rehearsal hall, the green room, all the way up the stairs to the wings.

Karen has been involved in over 200 productions at DHT alone. What is DHT without Karen Wolfe? Please help us by making your voice be heard, to ensure that Karen receives the job security and the appreciation she rightly deserves after decades of tirelessly providing us with stunning, award-winning costumes. Sign our petition so as to bring this matter to the attention of DHT's board members and reason with current DHT administration.
