The Issue

Julie Miller and her children, Freyja and Edward, are U.S. citizens seeking a secure and peaceful life in Canada after a harrowing escape from life-threatening abuse and persecution by Miller’s ex-husband and his past associations. As a former affiliate of a white supremacist group, Miller has also fallen victim to threats from her ex-husband’s previous associates after renouncing the ideology she was forced into adopting during the years of abuse. She has since influenced others (including her ex-husband) to become free from the clutches of this damaging belief system.

Former members of extremist groups in the United States are often targeted with threats and violence after leaving, as did occur to Ms. Miller and her ex-husband to the extent of requiring FBI protection at one point in their lives. It is especially harrowing for women like Ms. Miller who also are survivors of domestic abuse from the same man whom she helped to leave extremist groups. With Canada’s long-standing reputation for promoting peace and human rights, the deportation of this family would place them in imminent and significant danger. Although Ms. Miller and her family were once granted refugee protection in 2020, the Minister contested the decision, ultimately leading to two different Federal Court Justices (in 2022 and 2024) upholding the Immigration and Refugee Board decisions finding that although Ms. Miller and her family did not receive perfect protection, the protection provided by authorities in the United States was adequate.

However, the reality of Ms. Miller and her family while in the United States was characterized by live a life of constant relocation, temporary stays at shelters, constant need for protection orders which were continually violated by Ms. Miller’s ex-husband, and a life of persistent fear and anxiety due to threats received after leaving her past ideologies behind.

Being the subject of award-winning films like Skin 2019, Ms. Miller and her family are well-known and face additional challenges in being able to lead normal lives in the United States.

Help us protect the safety of Ms. Miller and her family. Their situation represents grave risks factors identified by humanitarian and refugee law.

Their continuance in Canada ensures they remain free from further victimization and continue their journey towards healing and contributing positively to society. Since being in Canada, Ms. Miller, Freyja and Edward have contributed greatly to Canadian society through voluntary work, making donations and showing moral support to diverse causes, including regarding racial minority groups and the LGBTQ+ community, supporting fundraisers, educating on and raising awareness concerning victims of domestic abuse and gender-based violence, among other altruistic endeavours.

Help us advocate for Ms. Miller and her family to remain in safety in Canada where they have contributed greatly to their communities. Let us show our American neighbours that women’s rights, protection against violence and child abuse, choosing love and inclusivity over hate, and a dedication to making positive contributions to our country will always be embraced. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and if this speaks to you, consider supporting Ms. Miller and her family by signing this petition.
