Keep Jessica Davis on Compass Academy Staff

The Issue

Dear Compass Academy Administrators,

We are community members of Compass Academy Middle School. We want to address the decision to terminate Jessica Davis as an educator of Compass Academy on the basis that she is not a “best fit” for our students as she does not speak Spanish, and we want to ask for Jessica Davis to stay on the staff. We feel this would benefit us by the evidence that her work has significantly improved the learning, social/emotional learning, and restorative justice practices our students took part of in the 2023-2024 school year.  The following are documented and successful examples of Jessica Davis’s contribution to the Compass Academy community. Jessica Davis has:
    •     Encouraged students to plan and drive their field work excursions
    •    Field work excursions were lead by only 2 other educators of a staff of 14, setting an example for other teachers to follow
    •    Built strong relationships with tier 3 and tier 2 students in a way that developed their leadership skills and curiosity
    •    Demonstrated the need for a black female educator on campus as students appreciate different cultures. Additionally closed a gap between communication and inclusion of black students’ families, aligning with Compass Academy’s mission of inclusivity
    •    Enabled student work to capture the attention of the executive director of Colorado Asian Pacific Union and the executive director of The Japanese Community Center, Sakura Square; further working for students exposure of diverse communities and creating interest in future partnerships with Compass Academy Students
    •    Successfully harnessed collaborations with programs leading to continued investment of precious partnerships
    •    Partnerships included are Arrupe Jesuit High School, Regis University, and Readi Lab. These partnerships were reinvigorated in Jessica Davis’ classrooms, her being only member of the 8th grade level team to do so this school year, a practice not seen in the previous school year in that grade level team
    •    Contributed to the success of collaborative solution practices and further ensuring the strong foundation of students’ development of lagging skills. A practice of utmost importance for students of all backgrounds to embrace, and to enable their future success
We the undersigned, call on the Compass Academy Administrators to make a difference by ensuring the continuous growth of historically marginalized communities in keeping an educator on staff who has shown well fortified investments to our community.
