Texas A&M is considering removing its Hispanic Studies Department. We feel the eradication of this department would only serve to undermine the support system for many Latinx students and tarnish the recent designation of A&M as an Hispanic Serving Institution. This could also result in turning away faculty from seeking tenure or other positions at Texas A&M and the resulting lack of  representation would impact the presence of a faculty support that many Latinx students seek out on campus. It could also turn away potential students from attending A&M, which in turn could result in the University falling beneath the 25% threshold needed to maintain HSI status. One must also consider the demographics of our state, where Hispanics represent 40 percent of the population. That figure will be close to 50 percent in 2030 as Hispanics account for about 65% of the state's growth. That said, the Department of Hispanic Studies must not only be preserved, but become a flagship of our university to continue attracting Hispanic students to Texas A&M in the future. Doing so would help Texas A&M to continue prospering and also put us at a competitive advantage in relation to other universities in the state. Demography is destiny, and we should embrace and capitalize on this. Please consider all the direct and indirect impacts that the removal of Hispanic Studies at Texas A&M would come to bear down on the Latinx student population and the reputation and prestige of the University as a whole.
