Keep Herzog Park: protect Irish-Jewish history

Keep Herzog Park: protect Irish-Jewish history
The Issue
We call on Dublin City Council to reject the motion to dename Herzog Park and to preserve the name that honors one of Ireland’s most distinguished sons, Chaim Herzog.
Herzog Park is not named after the modern State of Israel. It is named after an Irish-born figure, raised and educated in Dublin, whose family played an important role in Ireland’s Jewish community. His father, Rabbi Isaac Herzog, served as Chief Rabbi of Ireland, and the Herzog family made lasting contributions to Irish society.
Chaim Herzog was born in Belfast, grew up in Dublin, attended Wesley College, and went on to become a respected diplomat, UN ambassador, and the President of Israel. Dublin named the park after him to recognize an Irishman who rose to global prominence while staying deeply connected to his Irish roots.
Removing his name now would erase a piece of Irish–Jewish history and send a troubling message to a small minority community at a time when antisemitism is rising worldwide after the atrocities of October 7. Dublin should stand for inclusivity and historical respect, not symbolic acts that alienate minorities.
We urge Dublin City Council to
• Keep the name Herzog Park
• Protect Irish–Jewish heritage
• Reject discrimination and division
• Uphold Dublin’s values of fairness, inclusion, and respect for all communities
Please join us by signing and sharing this petition. Together we can ensure that Dublin continues to honor its history and its diverse communities.
