Keep Hazel Goes Cook classrooms intact for 2026-2027
The Issue
The importance of maintaining the current classroom structure at Hazel Goes Cook cannot be overstated, especially as we look towards the 2026-2027 school year. As a concerned parent, I am troubled by the proposal to introduce four combo classes into the curriculum. I believe such changes will not benefit our students, nor will they leverage the unique strengths and investments our school has made in its current teaching staff.
The reality is that our current classroom sizes do not warrant the need for combo classes. In an environment already challenged by late enrollments, forcing students into larger, mixed-level groups could detract from their learning experience. Studies have shown that smaller class sizes positively correlate with academic success and individual attention, both of which could be compromised with this shift in structure.
Additionally, it's crucial to consider the investments the school site has made in our teachers, specifically Mr. Lozano, as he is being displaced and being forced to move to a different school. He has proven his dedication to Cook by furthering his knowledge in IB. He was also teacher of the year, and has fostered an effective learning environment. His move to another school could disrupt the quality of education and as shown in the past could lower our testing scores in as little as a year.
But it's not just about the numbers and efficiency metrics. Combo classes can often lead to decreased student morale and increased teacher stress, as educators struggle to balance the diverse needs of different grade levels within a single classroom. This can impact the overall learning atmosphere and diminish the personalized attention each student needs to excel.
Let's prioritize what's best for our children's education and future. By maintaining our current classroom structures and keeping esteemed educators like Mr. Lozano and Ms. Rassmusen, we are choosing a path that honors the quality of education. Let's not compromise on the standards and care that our students deserve. Sign this petition to make sure Hazel Goes Cook continues in its tradition of excellence and avoids unnecessary restructuring that might set us back.
