Keep Golf in Cajon High School for Student Success

The Issue

I’ve been playing golf for about four years, and as a woman in golf, it’s already hard enough to have a women’s golf team. Eliminating it at Cajon High School in San Bernardino County makes it even harder for both women and men in the county to get into golf, attain scholarships, get into better colleges, and therefore secure better jobs in their future.

Cajon High School is renowned for its commitment to both sports and academics. By cutting the golf program, we're not just removing a sport; we're taking away a passion for many students. Golf offers unique benefits for student development—it teaches discipline, precision, and patience, and plays a crucial role in promoting physical fitness. But perhaps most importantly, golf opens the door to numerous scholarship opportunities, giving students a chance to further their education and improve their overall quality of life.

In San Bernardino County, golf isn’t just a sport; it’s a potential career path. It helps students develop important social and professional skills that are useful in many areas of life. Losing the golf program at Cajon High could limit opportunities for many young people in our community, closing the door on potential futures they have been working towards.

The impact of terminating the golf program could be detrimental. Students passionate about golf may have to give up their dreams, potentially leading to decreased student engagement and school spirit. The connections and achievements students have made both on the course and off would be chipped away, unraveling years of dedication and hard work.

We call on the San Bernardino County School District to consider the broader impacts of removing golf from Cajon High School. Retaining the golf program will not only benefit current students but also attract future students passionate about this sport. It will ensure that students have access to diverse extracurricular opportunities that aid in their holistic development.
