Keep Foss Free for Locals

Keep Foss Free for Locals
The Issue
This is in regards to the incoming parking charges at the Falling Foss and May Beck car parks, which I believe will have a significant negative impact on the well-being of our local community.
Many of our residents work in minimum wage jobs, and the rising cost of living has made it increasingly difficult for them to make ends meet. Introducing parking charges would place an added financial burden on individuals who are already struggling, making it harder for them to enjoy the local area without the added stress of parking fees.
In a time when our health services are under increasing strain and there is growing pressure on mental health, being able to go for a walk, enjoy nature, and relieve stress is one of the few free and accessible activities left to our community. Charging for parking would place a barrier to that, especially for those who rely on the local green spaces to decompress.
We understand that maintaining public services comes with costs, but we firmly believe that keeping this car park free for local residents is a simple and effective way to support the community.
A potential solution could be to allow local residents to apply online for a permit and display a letter or document in their vehicles. This would ensure that the parking is accessible for those who need it the most, without creating unnecessary bureaucracy or difficulty for anyone involved.
By ensuring that this car park remains free for residents, you would not only be helping individuals who are struggling to make ends meet but also contributing to the preservation of a stress-free and healthy environment for all.
