The Issue

Food for Now has been serving free food and essential items outdoors at 2835 Lake Shore Blvd West (Woods Manor, Toronto Seniors Housing) for the past 16 months.
Each week, we provide pantry items, fresh food, bread, toiletries, treats, and basic necessities to people facing food insecurity. Approximately 70% of those we serve are seniors, many of whom live directly in this building. Some have mobility challenges, limited income, or difficulty accessing traditional food programs. Our presence at this location has allowed them to receive support safely, with dignity, and without the need to travel.
In July 2025, Food for Now was instructed by Toronto Seniors Housing to vacate the covered front entrance area of the building following concerns that access to the front door was being affected. We complied immediately and relocated our setup to the frontage of two leased businesses within the same Toronto Seniors Housing property, with the full permission of the tenants.
For nearly a year, we have operated in this new location without incident.
On January 23, 2026, we were served with the same notice dated July 25, 2025, stating that Food for Now must fully vacate Toronto Seniors Housing property or face trespassing and possible legal action.
We are now asking the City of Toronto and Toronto Seniors Housing to work with us on a reasonable, compassionate solution.
Our request is simple and specific:
Permission to operate one day per week for approximately 2.5 hours

Access to a designated area on the premises that does not block doors or sidewalks

Permission to use existing recycling and garbage facilities at the rear of the building
Full commitment to cleanliness, safety, accessibility, and respect for residents and property

Food for Now is not a disruption—we are a support system.
This location is vital because it directly serves the seniors who live there, many of whom rely on us weekly.
We are asking the South Etobicoke community and supporters across Toronto to stand with us, to help sensitize decision-makers, and to show that this community cares deeply about its seniors and neighbors experiencing food insecurity.
By signing this petition, you are asking for compassion, collaboration, and common sense.
Thank you for your support.
