Keep Flock safety cameras in the Township
The Issue
KEEP FLOCK SAFETY CAMERAS IN OUR TOWNSHIP
As residents and supporters of public safety in our community, we strongly support maintaining the Flock Safety camera system in our township.
These cameras are not designed to monitor law-abiding citizens. They are a tool used to help law enforcement identify stolen vehicles, locate missing persons, track suspects involved in violent crimes, and solve investigations more efficiently. In many cases, they have helped save lives and bring dangerous offenders into custody within hours.
Across the country, Flock camera systems have assisted police agencies in:
• Recovering kidnapped and missing children during AMBER Alerts
• Locating stolen vehicles and identifying fleeing suspects
• Solving homicide and shooting investigations
• Finding wanted violent offenders crossing through jurisdictions
• Assisting with Silver Alerts involving elderly individuals suffering from dementia
In Colorado, law enforcement agencies recently used Flock technology to safely resolve multiple AMBER Alert cases and a homicide investigation in just one week.
In Missouri, officers were able to quickly locate and safely recover a kidnapped 2-year-old child after an AMBER Alert was issued. (https://www.ky3.com
Flock technology has also helped police departments across the United States identify homicide suspects, recover stolen vehicles, and apprehend repeat violent offenders. In California, investigators used Flock cameras to track and arrest a suspect involved in a shooting investigation within hours. (San Francisco Chronicle)
According to published reports, Flock systems are now assisting agencies in solving thousands of crimes daily nationwide that otherwise would have no leads.
Public safety tools like these give local officers the ability to respond faster, share information with neighboring agencies, and develop leads that otherwise may never exist. Criminals today move quickly between cities and townships. Our police departments need modern tools to keep up.
We also understand the importance of privacy and accountability. Any use of this technology should continue to follow state law, department policy, audit requirements, and legitimate law-enforcement purposes only. Responsible oversight and public transparency are essential.
However, removing these cameras entirely would eliminate a valuable investigative tool that has repeatedly proven effective in helping law enforcement protect communities and save lives.
We respectfully ask township leadership to continue supporting the Flock Safety camera program in order to help keep our community safe for residents, families, businesses, and visitors. Olmsted Twp has repeatedly been one of the safest cities in the country so let’s keep it that way and give our police the modern tools needed to keep up with times!
