The Issue

This petition is brought forward with respect and appreciation for the long standing relationship between the City of Orillia, Soldier's Memorial Hospital, Canadian Veterans, and the Royal Canadian Legion #34 in Orillia, Ontario.

OSMH's current position to remove two ex-officio positions from their board of directors has disappointed many in the community, and demonstrates disregard for the shared history that poignantly exists between these institutions.

It is a symbolic slap in the face, undermining the immense contributions and sacrifices of our city, the veterans and the Legion, who have helped to positively shape the very fabric of our community life.

Ex-officio positions on the board have been more than just ceremonial appointments; they serve as an everlasting link that embodies the collaboration, mutual respect, and historical bond between the hospital and those who have served.

Their presence ensures that the board’s decisions are always considerate of veteran affairs and the broader local community ethos. The removal of these positions risks severing a key connection that upholds the very values we cherish.

Soldier's Memorial Hospital's commitment to honoring this history aligns with national values of veneration and respect for those who have served our country. This isn’t merely about retaining positions; it’s about upholding our collective memory and responsibility.

The hospital's mission to provide compassionate, quality healthcare is intrinsically linked with understanding and valuing our regional heritage, including the integral role played by our veterans. Removing these ex-officio positions not only risks losing this insight but also sends an unintentional message that their contributions are no longer valued as part of the hospital's narrative.

We implore Soldier's Memorial Hospital and its decision-makers to reconsider this course of action. We urge them to retain the ex-officio positions on the board of directors, thereby reaffirming their commitment to a longstanding, respected tradition and partnership.

Sign the petition to show your support in maintaining the pride, respect, and recognition deserving of those who have dedicated their lives in service to our nation. Let's preserve the symbolic relationship that honors our history and our heroes.
