We strongly oppose the closure of Elsie Allen High School. Rather than shutting it down, Santa Rosa City Schools must invest in its growth and success. 

Elsie Allen is not just a school; it is an essential pillar of the Roseland, Moorland and Santa Rosa communities. It appears that the Santa Rosa City Schools do not see the Elsie Allen community and its vital role in educating students, supporting families, and building pride and responsibility.

The Elsie Allen High School Foundation has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for career and college assistance because community leaders and businesses recognize the value of Elsie Allen students, families, and staff. Why doesn’t the school district see the same?

Many involved in the unfair and arguably illegal cost reduction process have ignored the voices of the Elsie Allen community. Too often, those in power dismiss Elsie Allen as "less than." That is false. Our students and graduates excel in every field—medicine, law, finance, education, engineering, the arts, and skilled trades. Elsie Allen fosters a unique culture of belonging, gratitude, resilience, and achievement. Our families celebrate first-generation high school and college graduates. Our students shine in academics, the arts, and athletics, winning state and national championships in drama, debate, and rugby.

We are also a community that stands together in times of triumph and crisis. We embrace and uplift every student—English language learners, special education students, immigrants, refugees, children of veterans, and more. We are a family, and our strength is in our unity.

The board and the district have not shown a commitment to the bright future of Elsie Allen. Instead, you treat us as expendable, and a burden. You know little or nothing about us or our contributions to Roseland, Moorland and Santa Rosa. Have you asked why there is white flight and why some families enroll their children at distant campuses? Is Elsie Allen unsafe—or is it simply perceived that way because it serves a predominantly Latino and low-income population? Anyone who truly looks will see a safe campus with strong programs, talented educators, and exceptional students.

Yes, our test scores reflect the challenges of a school where many parents did not have the privilege of attending high school or college. Still, students and communities in Southwest Santa Rosa, deserve a public high school in their neighborhood that meets their needs. Instead of abandoning Roseland and Moorland, Santa Rosa City Schools should be working to strengthen it.

Elsie Allen is more than just a school—it's the heart of Roseland and Moorland. Losing Elsie Allen would place extreme stress on families and students. It would force students into schools in other districts. There is loyalty to Elsie Allen. There is no loyalty to the Santa Rosa City School District. Many students will leave the Santa Rosa City Schools, if the Santa Rosa School District does not show total commitment to the success of the Elsie Allen community. We have options. Those options will result in the loss of over a thousand students from Santa Rosa City Schools, and the cost savings you are seeking will vanish. This action will cause irreparable damage, and will not achieve your goals.

Elsie Allen plays a unique role that cannot be replaced. It is the choice for many Roseland and Moorland families who want a diverse neighborhood school that combines culture, community, and academic excellence. Elsie Allen is also renowned for its SDC classes which support students with moderate and severe autism.

As students, alumni, and community members, we love Elsie Allen. It is our home. It embodies the values of Roseland and Moorland—diversity, inclusion, and excellence.

We demand that you keep Elsie Allen open without discriminatory conditions. We demand that you learn about the values that are promoted at Elsie Allen. We demand that you learn about, appreciate, and value the students, families, staff, and programs that make Elsie Allen our home.

Nos oponemos firmemente al cierre de la escuela secundaria Elsie Allen. En lugar de cerrar Elsie Allen, el Distrito de Santa Rosa City Schools (SRCS) debe invertir en su crecimiento y éxito.

Con demasiada frecuencia, quienes están en el poder ven inferior Elsie Allen. Pero estan mal. Nuestros estudiantes y graduados se destacan en todos los campos: medicina, derecho, finanzas, educación, ingeniería, artes y oficios especializados. Elsie Allen fomenta una cultura única de pertenencia, agradecimiento, resiliencia y logros. Nuestras familias celebran a los graduados de la escuela secundaria y la universidad de primera generación. Nuestros estudiantes brillan en lo académico, las artes y el atletismo, ganando campeonatos estatales y nacionales en teatro, futbol, debate y rugby.

También somos una comunidad que se mantiene unida en tiempos de triunfo y crisis. Abrazamos y animamos a todos los estudiantes: aquellos que estan aun aprendiendo inglés, estudiantes de educación especial, inmigrantes, refugiados, hijos de veteranos y más. Somos una familia y nuestra fuerza está en nuestra union.

La junta y el distrito no han demostrado que tienen compromizo con un futuro brillante Elsie Allen. En cambio, nos tratan como si fueramos desechables y como una carga. ¿Saben a caso un poco o nada sobre nosotros o nuestras contribuciones a Roseland y Santa Rosa? ¿Se ha preguntado por qué hay una fuga de estudiantes blancos y por qué algunas familias matriculan a sus hijos en escuelas lejanas? ¿Es Elsie Allen insegura, o simplemente se la percibe de esa manera porque atiende a una población predominantemente latina y de bajos ingresos? Cualquiera que mire de verdad, verá un campus seguro con programas sólidos, educadores talentosos y estudiantes excepcionales.

 

Sí, los puntajes de nuestros exámenes reflejan los desafíos de una escuela donde muchos padres no tuvieron el privilegio de una educacion secundaria. Aún así, los estudiantes y las comunidades del suroeste de Santa Rosa merecen una escuela secundaria pública. En lugar de abandonar Roseland y Moorland, las escuelas de la ciudad de Santa Rosa deberían trabajar para fortalecerlas.

Elsie Allen es más que una simple escuela: es el corazón de Roseland y Moorland. Perder a Elsie Allen supondría un estrés extremo para las familias y los estudiantes. Obligaría a los estudiantes a ir a escuelas de otros distritos. Hay lealtad hacia Elsie Allen. No hay lealtad hacia el Distrito Escolar de la Ciudad de Santa Rosa. Muchos estudiantes abandonarán las escuelas de la ciudad de Santa Rosa si el Distrito Escolar de Santa Rosa no muestra un compromiso total con el éxito de la comunidad de Elsie Allen. Tenemos opciones. Esas opciones resultarán en la pérdida de más de mil estudiantes de las escuelas de la ciudad de Santa Rosa y los ahorros que busca el Distrito desaparecerán. Su acción causará un daño irreparable y no logrará sus objetivos.

Elsie Allen desempeña un papel único que no puede ser reemplazado.
