My family was one of many to receive the news that savethechildren.org has made the decision to close our local HeadStart Program in Dunkirk, Indiana due to staffing shortages and lack of attendees. This program prioritizes low-income families in allowing a safe and fun place for their children ages 3 and 4 years to learn and grow at no cost. The program also allows children who may not be from a low-income family if there is room in the class. In a small town like ours, programs like these are what help keep families going. Many people are struggling in the current economy, so to be able to send your child to school, to allow them to play and socialize, to give them the chance to learn and grow with others and with amazing teachers and staff, without having to worry about how much it will cost or worry if they are safe is a huge blessing and gift. If this is taken away from Dunkirk, it will break the hearts of not only the staff who have formed a bond with these little ones, but it will also break the hearts of the little ones being told they can't go to school anymore until they are elementary age. Please, whether you have a child in this program or not, we need your support to show SaveTheChildren that we need this location. We need it for our children and for their growth, for the staff for their jobs, for the parents trying to work to provide for their families and homes. Our HeadStart location in Dunkirk is special, its got something to it that not many preschools have.
