The Issue

Since moving to LaGrange, I've cherished the tranquility and natural beauty that defines our home. It is a place where families can turn off the noise of the modern world and enjoy a slower-paced, more peaceful lifestyle. It worries me deeply that this way of life is under threat. The developments of data centers and cryptomining facilities in our city could irreversibly harm the very essence of what makes LaGrange special.

Such developments do not merely impact the aesthetics and tranquility of our community. Data centers and cryptomining facilities are notorious for their high-energy consumption, contributing massively to carbon footprints and straining local resources. According to a report by Greenpeace, just one data center can consume as much electricity as 50,000 homes. The noise generated by such operations and the potential for adverse health impacts due to air and water pollution can degrade living conditions, affecting our families and our beautiful environment.

Moreover, these facilities offer little in terms of local employment, as they are often automated with minimal staffing needs. This means that while our precious resources are depleted, the benefits to our community remain negligible, often ending up in the hands of corporations with no interest in our long-term welfare.

What LaGrange deserves is sustainable development, projects that align with our values and contribute positively to our future. Instead of data centers and cryptomines, we should focus on encouraging businesses that enhance our community, promoting green technology initiatives, or investing in infrastructure that improves our quality of life without compromising our environment.

It's not too late to take a stand. We can push back against developments that threaten the well-being and future of LaGrange. By signing this petition, you help express opposition to these plans and support the protection of our resources, health, and property values. Your signature can propel local and state officials, as well as potential developers, to reconsider their plans. Let's come together as a community and speak out for LaGrange's preservation.

PLEASE DO NOT DONATE (unless you specifically want to support Change.org). The money does not go to our group.

Thank you to everyone who shared feedback about the data center. I listened carefully to residents and reviewed the plans with our subject-matter experts, weighing both the pros and the cons. In the end, my vote reflected what I believe is best for LaGrange’s long-term future. Like many communities in Georgia, LaGrange has felt the impact of industries leaving and the strain that puts on our ability to invest in jobs, public safety, and quality of life. I believe this data center is one way we move forward. The City Council approved the plans, and the end user will be Google. Based on the engineering reviews and commitments presented, the project is not expected to bring negative impacts to LaGrange; instead, we anticipate a significant, stable revenue stream we can reinvest locally. To put that in perspective: construction permits have already generated $1.8 million—funds that did not require raising taxes on a single resident. This is the kind of growth that helps us attract additional businesses and create the conditions where our kids can stay, find good jobs, and raise families in a safe, prosperous community. I respect that reasonable people can disagree on major projects. As my term concludes and I return to private life, I’ll stay engaged as a resident—tracking implementation, asking questions when needed, and supporting efforts to ensure commitments are met and community concerns are addressed. Thank you for staying involved and for keeping the conversation constructive.
