Our beautiful and long-established neighborhood of Coulwood West, Charlotte,  is on the brink of drastic changes that could disrupt our community's tranquility and character. We need your support to reject a rezoning petition that seeks to transform a 3-acre lot into a dense 16-unit rental housing development, with two additional single family homes.

This development threatens to clog an already busy entrance to our neighborhood, strain existing infrastructure and negatively affect the environment of our wildlife friendly neighborhood.

The plot in question is situated on a crucial entrance to not only our neighborhood but also Coulwood STEM Academy and Hillcrest Baptist Church. It additionally lies adjacent to a heavily trafficked Bellhaven Road.

The proposed plans for the development do not include a parking lot, rather, the shared driveways will attach directly to Kentberry Drive. The limited parking space provided within the development will inevitably lead to street parking. The increased traffic and congestion following this development would pose safety risks not just for residents but also for the children attending the middle school. A spike in vehicles and population density is not what our roads or our community needs.

Rezoning this area will have significant negative impacts. Not only will it affect the safety and convenience of our community, but it will also overshadow the integrity and character of Coulwood West. Our neighborhood has thrived as a close-knit community with family-friendly values and open spaces. We risk losing this unique identity if this petition is approved.

We aim to protect our neighborhood and maintain its existing character by opposing this rezoning petition. We propose alternative solutions that honor our community's vision, such as considering development options that are more aligned with the existing neighborhood, with adequate parking for future residents.

Please stand with us and voice your objections to the proposed changes by signing this petition. Together, we can protect the future of Coulwood West for ourselves, our children, and for generations to come.

The public hearing date has been set for November 17th, starting at 5pm. We need a good showing in person so please join your neighbors if you are able! Keep your eyes peeled for a neighborhood meeting in advance of the hearing to organize our message.

Subject: Opposition to Rezoning Petition 2025-088

Dear [Council Member/Mayor],

I am writing to formally oppose Rezoning Petition 2025-088 as it is currently planned, submitted by Northway Homes for the property at Kentberry Drive and Bellhaven Boulevard. This proposal is too dense for the area, threatens traffic safety, and could damage nearby wetlands and stream buffers.

Our neighborhood is already experiencing traffic congestion and infrastructure strain. Adding more driveways and housing units along Bellhaven Boulevard will make local roads less safe and increase stormwater runoff. The proposal is also inconsistent with the surrounding N1 single-family zoning and the spirit of Charlotte's 2040 Comprehensive Plan for context-sensitive growth.

For these reasons, I respectfully urge you to deny Rezoning Petition 2025-088 or require substantial changes to reduce density, protect environmental features, and maintain neighborhood character.

Over 500 members of our community have signed a petition in opposition to this rezoning, reflecting widespread concern and unity among residents who want to preserve neighborhood safety and character.
