The Issue

Community Action School has been a cornerstone of education in our community since 1994, providing a vital and nurturing learning environment for students who need it most. As a designated community school, we are able to offer critical wraparound supports such as vision care, dental services, and additional resources that connect families to support within the broader community. The recent discussions by district leadership that could lead to a possible proposal to phase out this important institution are not only misguided but could have serious consequences for the students and families who depend on its unique programs and services.

The school has developed strong relationships with families and students, offering individualized attention, targeted instruction, and proven results in student growth year after year. This has allowed students from high-needs backgrounds to thrive in ways they might not have been able to in a different setting. Community Action School has consistently demonstrated its dedication to inclusivity, equity, and academic progress, making it an indispensable asset to the District 3 Community.

Community Action School provides far more than academic instruction. It offers stability, safety, and a supportive environment for students facing significant challenges. The proposed phase-out risks displacing these students, who may not find the same level of understanding, consistency, and tailored support elsewhere. This is particularly critical for students with diverse learning needs and those from underserved backgrounds who benefit immensely from the comprehensive resources and care offered at our school.

Furthermore, research consistently shows that schools built around a smaller school community and personalized attention lead to stronger outcomes for students, especially those facing economic or social barriers. Community Action School has demonstrated tremendous academic growth year after year, proving that this model works. Closing the school would dismantle a successful, equitable learning environment and a lifeline for many families.

Families and community members have also been deeply concerned by the lack of meaningful engagement and transparency in this decision-making process. Parents, educators, and students have not been adequately consulted or included in discussions about the future of the school, despite being the people most impacted by these decisions.

Rather than pursuing a phase-out, our school community has expressed openness to alternative solutions, including relocation to another available space within the district if necessary to meet district needs. We have repeatedly asked about this possibility, yet have not received clear answers or consideration of this option.

We urge district leadership to reconsider this direction and instead work collaboratively with the Community Action School community to find equitable solutions that do not displace vulnerable students or dismantle a successful school. Preserving this institution means protecting student success, advancing equity within our district, and maintaining a critical component of our community’s educational support network.

Join us in our effort to ensure that Community Action School remains a beacon of opportunity, stability, and growth for all families. Please sign this petition to show your support for keeping Community Action School open and thriving.
