Keep Colbert! Renew The Late Show!

Keep Colbert! Renew The Late Show!
The Issue
To: George Cheeks, CEO of CBS; Amy Reisenbach, President of CBS Entertainment; David Stapf, President of CBS Studios; and Paramount Global Leadership
We, the undersigned devoted viewers and concerned citizens, are writing to vehemently protest the decision to cancel "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" in May 2026 and to demand a new contract for Stephen Colbert as its host.
Stephen Colbert has consistently proven himself to be an unparalleled talent in late-night television. For nine straight seasons, "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" has been the #1 late-night program in total viewers, consistently outpacing its competitors. In Q2 2025 alone, "The Late Show" averaged 2.42 million viewers, significantly more than "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" (1.77 million) and "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" (1.19 million). This consistent ratings dominance is a testament to Mr. Colbert's wit, intelligence, insightful commentary, and unparalleled ability to connect with a diverse audience.
CBS has stated that the cancellation is a "purely financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night." However, this explanation rings hollow given the show's consistent ratings success and the network's acknowledgment that "The Late Show" is "a staple of the nation's zeitgeist" and that Stephen Colbert is "irreplaceable." We also note the troubling timing of this announcement, coming shortly after Paramount's $16 million settlement with Donald Trump, a settlement which Mr. Colbert publicly critiqued on his show. Many, including prominent politicians and media observers, are questioning whether this decision is indeed purely financial or if it is politically motivated, sacrificing free speech to appease certain interests.
"The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" is more than just an entertainment program; it is a vital platform for sharp, comedic commentary on current events, a space for thoughtful interviews with leaders and entertainers, and a source of much-needed laughter and perspective in challenging times. Losing this show is not just a blow to CBS's programming but a loss for late-night television as a whole and the public discourse.
We urge CBS and Paramount Global to reconsider this short-sighted decision. Renew Stephen Colbert's contract and keep "The Late Show" on the air. The financial reasons cited are unconvincing in light of the show's undeniable success and its cultural importance. America needs Stephen Colbert's voice now more than ever.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned Concerned Viewers and Supporters
