The issue

Growing up in Central Otago has been a unique experience—its distinct culture, rich history, and tight-knit community have always been pillars of our local identity. However, the proposed government amalgamation threatening to merge the Central Otago District Council (CODC) with the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC), risks dissolving these valuable aspects of our lives.

The introduction of these amalgamation laws may have seemed like a step toward efficiency on paper, but for us in Central Otago, they represent potential disruption. Our community has its own set of needs that should not be overshadowed by the prosperity of larger neighboring districts. The essence of our local governance is its ability to tailor its policies and services to our unique demographic and geographic realities. Merging with a larger entity like QLDC could marginalize our voices.

Let's consider the potential cultural impact. Central Otago's culture, from our historical gold rush towns to our annual local festivals, enriches New Zealand’s diversity—preserving it must be a priority. Amalgamation may lead to decisions being made by a board unfamiliar with our cultural nuances, thereby eroding traditions that have been cherished for generations.

Moreover, the financial implications are staggering. Studies have shown that amalgamations often fail to produce the anticipated savings. Research published by the Australian Centre for Excellence in Local Government found that over 60% of council mergers increased local expenditures rather than reducing them. Our small businesses and residents cannot afford additional financial burdens, particularly in a post-pandemic economic climate.

What we need is a conscientious evaluation of the true costs and benefits of such a merger. We urge the government to consider alternative measures that would protect our local autonomy while still achieving economic efficiencies elsewhere.

Join us in preserving the unique identity of Central Otago. Sign this petition to tell the government that we demand to keep CODC as a standalone entity, safeguarding our culture and financial stability for generations to come.
