Keep City of Chandler Public Grass Areas

Keep City of Chandler Public Grass Areas
The Issue
Growing up in Chandler, AZ, the lush grass retention basins have been a vital part of our community. These open spaces not only provide us a place for recreation and relaxation but also play a crucial role in reducing the ambient heat that our city experiences, particularly during the sweltering summer months. The planned conversion of these green areas into xeriscaped spaces filled with rocks threatens to strip away these essential benefits.

The City of Chandler’s decision to move forward with Project ST2405.201 aims to replace these vibrant grassy basins with rock-filled barren landscapes, a move that overlooks the multifaceted advantages of keeping grass in our urban environment. Grass retention basins are invaluable as they contribute to cooling the area, which is critical during the hot days where temperatures frequently soar above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Moreover, these grassy basins serve as crucial gathering spots for families, friends, and pets where community bonds are strengthened and cherished memories are made. Removing them and replacing with rocks not only affects the environment but takes away spaces that our community has come to rely on for well-being and social interaction.
Evidence from numerous urban planning studies has shown that green spaces significantly impact the health and quality of life in urban areas. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, grass can be up to 30 degrees cooler than asphalt or rocks, providing a natural air conditioner effect. Transitioning to xeriscaping with rocks could increase local temperatures and negate this benefit.
It's understandable that the city might be attempting to address water conservation concerns; however, sustainable solutions exist that can keep our grassy basins while also conserving resources. Implementing smart irrigation systems, choosing drought-tolerant grass species, and using soil amendments that improve water retention are viable alternatives that should be considered before drastic changes are made.
We urge the City of Chandler to pause Project ST2405.201 and conduct a more thorough community consultation process to explore these alternatives. It's important to prioritize initiatives that maintain both the ecological balance and community needs. By signing this petition, you’re advocating for a decision that not only serves environmental goals but sustains the essential green landscape of Chandler that we all cherish.
