Keep Chinatown Open

Keep Chinatown Open! Chinatown street closures harm local merchants and residents.

Chinatown street closures are disguised as "supporting the community" but in reality, these events disturb hundreds of residents and drive business away from local, rent-paying merchants. Instead, street closures support outside performers and vendors who use these closures to profit from our community at our expense.

These street closures:

  • disturb local, rent-paying residents;
  • draw business away from local, rent-paying merchants;
  • impede access to our neighborhood for residents, merchants, and customers alike, particularly for those with disabilities;
  • create noise pollution (often exceeding city ordinances), causing an undue burden on our community;
  • generate excess garbage, dirtying our streets.

Furthermore, community outreach from the City and the various applicants regarding planned street closures has been severely lacking, with impacted residents and merchants receiving either last-minute or no notice of permit hearings. The exclusion of our community in the decision process — due to the language barrier and for the sake of administrative expediency — is discriminatory and unjust.

These street closures were introduced during COVID when businesses weren't able to host customers safely indoors, however times have changed — street closures no longer serve our community and instead negatively impact daily life and business for residents and merchants alike.

SIGN THIS PETITION to help us tell the City: Keep Chinatown Open!

THEN, TAKE THE NEXT STEP — Lend your voice at our appeal hearing:

On March 19th, 2024, the San Francisco Entertainment Commission approved LionDanceME's permit to close three blocks of Grant Avenue for lion dancing. The drumming from this event creates dramatically heightened noise levels (exceeding 100dB); at this level, NIOSH guidelines state that risk of hearing damage or loss can begin in as little as 15 minutes of exposure, yet the applicant has been approved to perform for 9 hours per day, both days of every weekend, for an entire year. This poses a serious public health risk to our community, as well as a significant disruption to residents, businesses, and community accessibility. Even after the applicant received emphatic community opposition just days earlier at a March 13th meeting, the permit was unanimously approved by the Entertainment Commission on March 19th, citing "no community opposition".

We have submitted an appeal and the permit is now temporarily suspended. Come lend your voice at our APPEAL HEARING:

Wed, April 17th, 5:00pm, San Francisco City Hall, Room 416

... and help us tell the City to Keep Chinatown Open!

  • 打擾當地付租居民;
  • 將業務從當地支付租金的商人手中奪走;
  • 阻礙居民、商人和顧客(特別是殘疾人)進入我們的社區;
  • 造成噪音污染(通常超出城市法規),對我們的社區造成不必要的負擔;
