The Issue

Carlos García came to Canada with a dream: to create a better life for his family. Leaving behind the violence, constant cartel extortion, and instability of Mexico, Carlos arrived full of hope and determination. He worked tirelessly, navigating the challenges of a new country while building a foundation for his wife and three children to join him.

But just as Carlos began to find his footing, life took an unimaginable turn. His wife, who was still in Mexico with their three children, left him for another man and abandoned their three children. For months at a time, she disappeared, leaving the children without food, resources, or adult supervision. Carlos was suddenly a single father, separated thousands of km and two borders from his children. He had to seek additional financial support of over CAD 40k to bring his children safely here. He has since been shouldering the responsibility of raising his children while trying to make ends meet in his new home, Canada.

Despite the heartbreak, Carlos did what he has always done—he fought. He took on every challenge, ensuring his children were fed, safe, and loved. In Canada, he noticed that his kids began to thrive. For the first time in their lives, they attend school without fear of violence or kidnapping. They've built friendships, learned English, and gained a sense of stability they've never had before. A psychologist’s report highlights the transformation in their lives: improved mental health, emotional stability, and the opportunity to dream of a future full of possibilities. Isn't that what Canada is all about?

Now, that future is under threat. Carlos and his children face deportation back to Mexico—a country where danger is constant, and safety is never guaranteed. Carlos’s hometown of Colima is ranked the most violent region in the world, with a staggering homicide rate of 140.32 per 100,000 inhabitants. Even Mérida, historically considered safe, has become a hotspot for cartel activity. Returning to Mexico doesn’t just mean losing the life they’ve built; it means putting their lives in immediate danger.

Carlos’s children would face unimaginable risks. His daughters are at high risk of kidnapping and human trafficking—terrifyingly common in Mexico. His son, who has gained confidence and independence in Canada, would be forced to grow up in fear instead of freedom and potentially become a target of the cartel's extortion. Worse, the family could be separated. Their mother, who has already abandoned them once, would become their primary guardian, leaving Carlos powerless to protect them while he rebuilds his life from scratch—again.

Carlos himself would be a target. With no savings, no shelter, and no resources, he would be starting from nothing. The cartels’ reach is vast, and Carlos knows that even obtaining basic identification like a debit card would make him traceable and a victim to their extortion again. Without the support of his parents, who have passed away, or his siblings, who have distanced themselves out of fear of extortion, Carlos and his children would be utterly vulnerable.

Carlos’s journey hasn’t been easy. Early in his immigration process, he was exploited by a consultant who took advantage of his desperation, costing him time, money, and critical opportunities to secure his and his family’s safety. Yet, despite every setback, Carlos has remained resilient. He works tirelessly to provide for his children, never losing hope that Canada can be the safe haven they so desperately need.

Time is running out. January 15th looms closer, and with it, the threat of deportation. This is more than a fight for residency—it’s a fight for survival, for stability, and for a future where Carlos’s children can grow up without fear.

Carlos has done everything right. He followed the rules, sought legal guidance, and worked hard to contribute to Canada. Now, all he asks is for the chance to stay—to keep his children safe and to give them the life they deserve.

This is where we come in. Together, we can stand with Carlos and his family. We can raise our voices, sign petitions, and share their story. Let’s show that Canada is a place that values safety, compassion, and opportunity. Let’s help Carlos and his children stay where they belong: here in Canada, where they can live, thrive, and dream.
