The Issue
My 13-year-old daughter has been playing volleyball through the Pueblo YMCA for six years. She loves the sport and plays throughout the year, participating in two seasons with the YMCA and one with her local school district.
We've encountered boys on opposing teams at the Y over the years. They're noticeably stronger and more aggressive, which impacts the game's balance and fairness. This past spring season, we faced an almost all-boys team with about seven boys and two girls, with their team keeping 5 boys on the court at all times, which made the playing field feel inequitable and discouraging for our girls.
Volleyball is an empowering sport for girls, offering them a space to develop teamwork, boost self-esteem, and maintain physical fitness. Unfortunately, the presence of significantly stronger male players undermines this safe environment and poses challenges to girls who wish to compete fairly and safely.
The YMCA's mission is to support youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. They should facilitate an inclusive environment but not at the expense of fairness and equality in competition. This can be achieved by ensuring that boys and girls have appropriate leagues that respect their developmental differences.
Although co-ed sports can be a valuable learning experience, volleyball traditionally provides a platform where girls can excel without the physical disparities that co-ed teams often present. When competitive balance is disrupted, it risks turning away our daughters from the sport they love.
We call upon the Pueblo YMCA to review their policies regarding mixed-gender teams in girls’ volleyball leagues. Calling to limit the amount of boys on the court at one time. It’s essential to reassess and regulate team compositions to establish fair play standards for the benefit of all participants.
By signing this petition, you are advocating for fair play, safety, and balance in our girls' sports leagues. Sign to urge the Pueblo YMCA to take action and keep boys out of the girls' volleyball teams if it can’t be made equal and fair on the court for all the female players, ensuring an equitable and empowering environment for all our daughters.
