Keep books on shelves in Fredericksburg ISD libraries

The Issue

The political movement aimed at censoring the books students can read in public schools has made it to Fredericksburg, Texas. In 2022, Fredericksburg Independent School District officials have received a record high request of 40 books to be taken off shelves. Last year, they received zero requests. This means more unnecessary work for teachers, librarians and staff of FISD, who are already overworked and overextended recovering from the strain of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Fredericksburg we already know the Supreme Court ruled in our favor in the '80s with the Supreme Court decision in Island Trees vs. Pico (1982). In Fredericksburg we believe in Intellectual Freedom guaranteed by the First Amendment of the Constitution that allows individuals the right to both seek and receive information from all points of view without restriction, as well as, free access to all expressions of ideas through which any and all sides of a question, cause or movement may be explored.

Sign this petition to show that you support the FISD's process of selecting materials that speak to a wide range of maturity levels, interest levels, cultural differences, and that explore various sides of controversial issues.
