As a student in Broward County, I have experienced the immense benefits of block scheduling firsthand. With fewer classes each day, I find myself less stressed, allowing me the mental space and energy to engage more deeply with my coursework. The longer class periods also enable teachers to provide more detailed instruction, leading to a better understanding of the subjects.

Block scheduling not only nurtures a healthier learning environment, but it also means less wasted time switching between classes. This time adds up over the course of a school day and a week, giving students more opportunities for vital free time. Free periods in a block schedule allow us to catch up on homework, collaborate on group projects, or simply recharge.

The Broward County School District is considering removing block scheduling, which would revert to a traditional schedule that many parents, students, and educators believe contributes to more stress and less meaningful academic engagement. In areas where traditional schedules are applied, studies have shown increased feelings of stress and exhaustion among students, ultimately affecting their performance and well-being.

With the shift away from block scheduling, we risk losing the unique advantages it offers. The flexible structure helps us students manage our time better, leading to lower stress levels and higher academic achievement. Moreover, teachers appreciate the opportunity to delve more deeply into subject matter without the constant interruption of class changeovers. The removal of block schedule also means the removal of a study hall, leading to less bonus pay for teachers and less catch-up time for students.

We urge the Broward County School Board to reconsider this decision. By keeping the block schedule intact, we protect an educational system that emphasizes quality over quantity, and prioritizes the well-being and success of its students.
