The Issue

Bengaluru, known as the "Silicon Valley of India," is a bustling metropolis rich in culture, diversity, and innovation. Its parks are vital green spaces that promote well-being and community interaction in a city with such a fast-paced lifestyle. However, current policies mandate that many of these parks, under the jurisdiction of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), close during the afternoon hours. This restriction not only limits public access but also undermines the full utilization of public resources for which taxpayers hard-earned money has been allocated.

Parks are more than just patches of green in an urban landscape; they serve as essential hubs for relaxation, exercise, social interaction, and environmental sustainability. Many cities around the world, including those with climates similar to Bengaluru's, have parks that remain open throughout the day, allowing residents and visitors alike unlimited access to these essential spaces. Afternoon closures impede the "Garden City's" residents from fully enjoying their city, especially those who may have flexible working hours, visitors, and the elderly who benefit from midday access to outdoor activities.

Additionally, Bengaluru is facing rapid urbanization and population growth. Public spaces like parks are more important than ever to enhance quality of life, providing a natural escape from concrete jungles, reducing urban heat, supporting biodiversity, and improving mental health. Research has consistently shown that access to open green spaces contributes significantly to improved physical and psychological well-being.

One solution would be to operate the parks on staggered staffing schedules to cover the entire day. This approach would ensure that park employees can still maintain a reasonable workload while keeping these open areas accessible. Moreover, transitional programs with community involvement can be established to assist in overseeing park activities during quieter periods, creating a sense of ownership and shared responsibility within the community.

It’s time to rethink and reform park operation policies in Bengaluru, aligning them with the needs of the community and fostering the growth of new communities that can thrive around these vibrant green spaces. Rewriting these policies signifies a commitment to optimizing the use of taxpayers' money, ensuring that public resources serve the community effectively.

Please sign this petition to urge the BBMP to revise their park operating hours, allowing for uninterrupted, all-day access. Support the call for a more open and inclusive Bengaluru, where community spaces can flourish and residents can come together to enjoy their city to the fullest.
