Keep AU from turning green space into faculty parking

The Issue

Alfred University's administration wants to pave the lawn across from Harder Hall (between Perlman and McMahon) to add more faculty parking. We don't want that, and here's why:

  • This space is a rare green space in the center of Academic Alley, AU's major gathering place.
  • This space is a wildlife refuge with mature trees and bushes that are essential for pollinating insects, songbirds, and more.
  • There are flat areas that have already been cleared of trees that would be much more appropriate places to add parking, such as behind the Wellness Center and the former South Hall site.
  • The lawn space is small, and wouldn't add much parking anyway. It is much better served remaining a green space where professors hold classes, students exhibit art, and much more.
  • Studies show that seeing trees and nature, even out a window, helps reduce stress and anxiety significantly for students.
  • AU's campus should remain human and pedestrian centered, not car centered.

Sign now, before we permanently lose one of few usable lawn spaces at AU, including mature, decades-old trees.
