Keep arts in the Brookwood Hall
Keep arts in the Brookwood Hall
The Issue
Brookwood Hall in East Islip has been home to the arts for nearly 40 years. The Islip Art Museum, the Islip Arts Council, the Museum School and the Carriage House have all called this building their home. Now after nearly 40 years the new Town of Islip Administration has decided a better use for the Carriage House would be to store lawnmowers and the "waste of space" as they refer to the Museum galleries would be better used as office space and conference rooms for town officials. They believe the Museum should be moved to a small house in Oakdale somewhere. As for the "waste of space" - Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenburg (to name a few) have graced the walls of those galleries. Yes, some of the same artists who are in the Museum of Modern Art - well that must be a waste of space too.
Whether you have seen a show, attended a reception, listened to a lecture, had tea and a tour, have taken a class, enjoyed the concerts, witnessed site-specific installations, viewed the permanent sculptures, learned about the history or the building or the town - Brookwood Hall has given the public culture and arts under one roof and on the same grounds for 40 years. This public space is enjoyed by a diverse populations of all ages. Town offices and conference rooms do not seem to be a public space and seem more like a "waste of space".
Why move what has been growing so fast and offers the public so much? Why do the taxpayers need more offices? What the taxpayers want is for Brookwood Hall to remain a cultural arts centers by keeping the Islip Art Museum, Islip Arts Council and Carriage House in Brookwood Hall.
Keep your comments professional and appropriate and let the new town administration know how you've used the arts at Brookwood Hall and why it's important to you.
Please call, write and email the following people and let them know you want Brookwood Hall to remain the Arts Center that it is right now. Keep The Arts In Brookwood Hall!! Visit us on the web http://keeptheartsinbrookwoodhall.yolasite.com/
