Keep Alimiyyah classes open at Madrassah Islamiyyah

The Issue

We strongly oppose the proposed closure of the Senior Girls’ Alimiyyah classes. This program provides essential Islamic education, tarbiyyah, mentorship, and a sense of belonging for many girls and young women in our community. The demand for English-taught Alimiyyah classes is high, especially for students who cannot access Urdu-based alternatives, and many would be left without suitable opportunities to continue their Islamic studies if these classes close.

The success and impact of the program are undeniable. Students, parents, and teachers consistently value the unique ethos of the madrassah, including its tailored tarbiyyah sessions, daily assemblies, and supportive learning environment. Many students have even made significant life decisions around their studies here, demonstrating their commitment and trust in the madrassah.

This decision also goes against the Islamic principles of supporting women’s education and making decisions through proper consultation (shūrā). Students, parents, and teachers overwhelmingly oppose the closure and deserve to have their voices heard before such a serious decision is made.

Financial concerns do not justify ending such an important service, especially when community fundraising efforts and continued demand show strong potential for sustainability.

We urge the committee to reconsider this decision, consult all stakeholders properly, and preserve this vital program for current and future generations of Muslim women.
